The Smart Grinder Pro is the most workflow-friendly hopper grinder in this price class. You set a grind time in 0.2-second steps, and it grinds straight into 54 mm or 58 mm portafilters. CoffeeGeek's full review found it can make good espresso, but the grounds are clumpy, it holds a lot of coffee, and it is not suited to single dosing. It fits people who keep beans in the hopper and grind by time every day.

Buy it if

  • You want timed, hands-off dosing straight into a portafilter.
  • You keep one coffee in the hopper for days at a time.
  • You own a Breville 54 mm machine and want matching cradles.

Skip it if

  • You switch beans often or want to single dose.
  • You mostly brew Chemex or French press, where CoffeeGeek found it weakest.

Strengths and limitations

What stands out

  • Timed dosing. Programmable in 0.2-second steps (Breville).
  • Two portafilter cradles: 50–54 mm and 58 mm.
  • Extra fine range. CoffeeGeek describes an adjustable upper burr carrier that adds finer settings beyond the 60 main steps (CoffeeGeek).
  • Quieter than the Encore ESP and Virtuoso+, in CoffeeGeek's comparison.

Limitations

  • High retention. CoffeeGeek called it unsuited to single dosing and recommended purging.
  • Clumpy espresso grounds. WDT helped in CoffeeGeek's review.
  • Display hard to read from below eye level, per the same review.
  • Fines at coarse settings. CoffeeGeek found it weaker for Chemex and press pot.

What independent testing found

Mark Prince's full review (CoffeeGeek, November 1, 2023) found the grinder "can approach" his Baratza Sette 270Wi benchmark for espresso at times, with work. For filter, it roughly matched the Encore ESP in his blind comparisons: two wins, one tie and one loss across four tastings. He measured about 2.1 g per second at pour-over settings. Those are one reviewer's results with his beans and recipes.

I'd pick the Smart Grinder Pro if timed grinding into a portafilter is the main goal and beans stay in the hopper. For single dosing or frequent bean changes, choose a single-dose grinder instead.
