Quick verdict

The Flair Classic is the entry point to lever espresso. It is a manual press with a 40 mm portafilter, 12–18 g doses, a 60 ml cylinder and an included pressure gauge. It needs no electricity itself, but it depends on a kettle for hot water and an espresso-capable grinder. The 60 ml cylinder limits yield to about 40 ml per shot, per Flair. It suits budget-minded learners who don't mind a hands-on routine.

Buy it if

  • You want to learn espresso fundamentals on a small budget.
  • You already own, or will buy, a fine-capable grinder and a kettle.

Skip it if

  • You want milk drinks without buying a separate frother.
  • You want larger or longer shots; see the Flair 49 PRO.

Flair's refurbished listing mentions a 5-year warranty on the stand and cylinder. The new-product page says 3 years (Flair). We use the new-product figure.

How a shot works

You preheat the cylinder, add ground coffee to the portafilter, pour in hot water from a kettle, and press the lever while watching the gauge. Flair recommends the flow-control portafilter for any grinder and the bottomless 2-in-1 portafilter with a burr grinder. Treat any pressure you read as feedback on your press, not a machine setting.

Strengths and limitations

What stands out

  • Pressure gauge included.
  • Two portafilters, including a flow-control option that is more forgiving.
  • Small and unplugged: 14 × 10 × 4 in assembled.

Limitations

  • Needs a kettle and preheating every session.
  • Small 60 ml cylinder limits yield.
  • No steam. Milk needs a separate frother.

Our recommendation

I'd point first-time lever users on a budget toward the Classic, as long as they budget for the grinder too.
