Quick verdict
A puck screen is a thin metal mesh placed on top of the tamped coffee. Normcore's 58.5 mm version is 1.7 mm thick 316 stainless steel with a 150 µm mesh, for 58 mm baskets. Normcore says its effect on headspace is negligible, but suggests cutting the dose by 0.5–1 g if the basket is very full. It is optional. The benefits described are the maker's claims, and we don't rate it as essential.
